How check cashing works at our Torrance store
You bring in your check and a photo ID, and our staff reviews it at the counter. If the check is accepted, we pay you cash minus our fee. We tell you the fee before you agree to the transaction.
Our store is at 1223 W Carson Street in Torrance, in the same parking lot as Starbucks and across from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. See the store page for directions from the 110 and the 405.
Our check cashing rates
Our check cashing fees are posted at the counter and follow California law (Civil Code section 1789.35). The law sets these maximums on the face amount of the check:
- Up to 3% for a payroll or government check when you show ID
- Up to 3.5% for a payroll or government check without ID
- Up to 12% for a personal check
For example, on a $500 payroll check with ID, the fee is at most $15.00, so you receive at least $485.00 in cash. The exact fee is shown at the counter before you agree. Check cashers in California register with the California Attorney General. Call (310) 787-7587 if you have questions before you come in.
Payroll, government, and debit cards
Our store cashes government and payroll checks. We also cash payroll debit cards and EBT-type debit cards. Ask the store which other check types it accepts, since that depends on the check and the amount.
You can find all of our counter services on the services page.
Why people cash checks in person
Some people do not have a bank account, and others have a bank that is closed when their check arrives. Cashing a check in person means you have cash in hand, with no waiting for a deposit to clear. Our staff is friendly and courteous.
We are an in-person, state-licensed store, which keeps your information local. Check cashing is for people who need cash now. If you can wait, a bank deposit may cost less, so compare both options before you decide.
