Regulator
Payday loans (deferred deposit transactions) in California are licensed and supervised by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) under the California Deferred Deposit Transaction Law. You can reach the DFPI at dfpi.ca.gov or toll-free at 1-866-275-2677.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also accepts complaints about consumer financial products at consumerfinance.gov or by phone at (855) 411-2372.
California payday loan rules
California law sets these limits on deferred deposit transactions:
- The check may be no more than $300, and the loan is up to $255 against that check.
- The fee may be no more than 15% of the check, which is $45 on a $300 check.
- The lender may hold the check for up to 31 days.
- A new loan may not be made to pay off an existing loan, and rollovers are not allowed.
- One returned-check fee of no more than $15 may be charged.
- A returned check does not lead to criminal prosecution.
License information
California payday lenders must be licensed by the DFPI, and anyone can verify a license with the DFPI at dfpi.ca.gov.
Truth in Lending
Under the federal Truth in Lending Act, the annual percentage rate (APR), finance charge and payment schedule for your loan are disclosed to you before you sign. Please read them carefully and ask us anything that is unclear.
Military Lending Act
Covered active-duty service members and their dependents are protected by the federal Military Lending Act.
Equal credit opportunity
The federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits creditors from discriminating against credit applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, or age (provided the applicant has the capacity to enter into a binding contract), and on the basis of receipt of public assistance income or the good-faith exercise of rights under the Consumer Credit Protection Act.
Online requests and in-store loans
Online requests are submitted through our application page and may be reviewed by lenders in a third-party network, who may verify your information and check your credit. You can also apply in person at our Torrance store. In-store payday loans are completed with a written agreement and disclosures, which you receive before you sign.
Loan amounts and terms may change; your exact terms are confirmed in your written agreement before you sign. We cannot promise approval.
